On May 15, members of the Rensselaer community participated in the Bike to Work Day Workplace Challenge and the RPI Brake Time team received the award for the most participants from a single employer in Rensselaer County. Over 400 people from across the Capital Region registered for the Challenge, and those riders peddled over 4,000 bicycle miles, saving 166 gallons of fuel, reducing CO2 emissions by 3,300 pounds,  and burning a total of 180,000 calories. The Capital District Transportation Committee (CDTC) sponsored the Capital Region Bike to Work Challenge for Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady Counties. Chris Nolin, director of community and state relations, accepted the trophy on behalf of the Institute.
