Today’s marketplace requires the right blending of skills to succeed. Lally School business students are already one step ahead as they learn the fundamental skills to manage at the intersection of business and technology. Part of this unique aptitude is gained by opportunities for experiential learning and development during the year, such as the recent Lally undergraduate student trip to New York City.

The day of discovery and community included a tour of Wall Street and the New York Stock Exchange, visits with successful leaders at top companies, and networking with Rensselaer alumni and alumnae. These Lally students are aspiring leaders interested in careers such as accounting, analytics, operations, supply chain, entrepreneurship, finance, investment banking, marketing, law, and sports management.

“The career exploration day allows Lally business students to build their professional network, meet with Rensselaer alumni and alumnae, connect with potential mentors, learn about new industries, and gain a firsthand view of different career paths,” said Tammy Bolduc, assistant director at the Rensselaer Center for Career and Professional Development. “In the afternoon, students are paired with a company host who explains the business environment and culture in that particular industry and the dynamic business atmosphere of a major metropolitan center like New York City.”

An impressive lineup of companies served as hosts for the Lally students, including NASDAQ, Deloitte, Ernst & Young, National Financial Network, ENSO Financial, and Facebook. Company representatives provided office tours, interactive presentations, meetings with staff to discuss careers and culture, panel discussions on industry issues, and question-and-answer sessions.

During their tour of the New York Stock Exchange, Lally students learned the many changes that have occurred over the years on the trading floor including going from thousands of traders to just about 500 traders now and going from a paper ticket system to data via electronic pads.

The day concluded with a successful networking event where Lally students met with Rensselaer alumni and alumnae who are currently working in New York City. Several of the Lally students obtained interviews for internships and/or possible future employment as a result of the trip.

Lally has strong internships/co-ops and mentorship programs that allow the business students to take advantage of opportunities both domestically and globally. These experiences increase their profile with future potential employers, often leading to high placement rates and high competitive starting salaries for graduates.
