The Lally School of Management and the Rensselaer Institute for Data Exploration and Applications (IDEA) hosted 15 teams at the inaugural Business Analytics Case Competition on April 8. Undergraduate and graduate student teams analyzed a case study, utilized provided data sets, and presented their findings to a panel of judges at the competition.

“The Rensselaer Business Analytics Case Competition brings together students from across all academic and research disciplines who are challenged with a real-world problem in the data analytics domain,” said Dorit Nevo, associate professor of information systems at the Lally School of Management. “Students get to experience analytics firsthand and apply what they have learned in their courses in an exciting competition format.”

Zezhen Qiu ’15, Danjie Zhou ’15, and Kelly He ’15, all master’s students in business analytics, won the first-place team prize of $1,500. Trent Shapiro ’15, who is a co-terminal student earning a bachelor’s in aeronautical engineering and master’s in business analytics, and Anders Hur ’15 and Sivabalamunees Meyappan ’15, both master’s students in business analytics, won the second-place prize of $1,000. Pablo Campos de Carvalho, Victor Shen, and Josh Reynoso, Ph.D. candidates in management, won the third-place prize of $500.

The competition was sponsored by the Rensselaer IDEA, a key component exemplifying The New Polytechnic at Rensselaer, with a goal to maximize the capabilities of new tools and technologies for the purpose of expediting scientific discovery and innovation, developing the next generation of digital enablers, and preparing students to succeed and lead in a data-driven world.
