Today, Rensselaer employs over 2,100 faculty and staff who hail from various parts of the United States and around the world. Rensselaer employees bring diverse intellectual, geographical, gender, and ethnic perspectives to Rensselaer’s work and campus communities and, at times, beyond.

In an effort to consistently provide enhanced benefits and support to Rensselaer employees, the Division of Human Resources has partnered with Assist America PartnerRe, to ensure that Rensselaer employees receive high-quality medical care when traveling away from home. Founded in 1990, Assist America is known as the nation’s largest provider of global emergency services for employee and student benefit plans.

“Medical emergencies and other unexpected events can happen at any time, and when they occur during travel to an unfamiliar place, seeking emergency services can be a daunting task,” said Curtis Powell, vice president for human resources. “The value-added benefit from Assist America PartnerRe connects members and their families to a series of global emergency services whenever an employee and/or their eligible family member travel more than 100 miles from home or to another country.”

The protection of Assist America becomes active when a member travels more than 100 miles from home or to another country. Of special note, a single phone call to Assist America will put the organization’s vast network of resources in motion on behalf of any medical travel emergency. Services offered include evacuating someone to appropriate health care; helping to replace a prescription; critical-care monitoring; legal, interpreter, and counseling referrals; and care for minor children left unattended due to the medical incident.

Additional services that are also fully paid by Assist America include medical consultation and referrals, medical repatriations, foreign hospital admission assistance, emergency message service, and transport of a friend or relative to join the patient, among others.

Assist America offers a 24-hour-a-day, 365-day-a-year Operations Center that is staffed by experienced, knowledgeable, multilingual, emergency-certified medical and assistance professionals. In addition, there are no caps, limits, or charge-backs for any of the services arranged and provided.

“We are fully committed to the total well-being of our employees and their families and this new benefit is a great addition to our suite of comprehensive benefits program,” Powell added.
